How to choose the right makeup for you
Hello makeup lovers!
Today I'm bringing for you guys some tips how to choose the right makeup. I'm pretty sure that there are many girls, women or maybe guys, who don't have money or just don't want to buy tons of foundations, mascaras, eyeshadows and so to find the perfect shade, formulation and pigmentation of makeup products. For those of you, I tried to create something like list of what you should do before you want to buy something. Hope you will enjoy my advices.
FOUNDATION
Before you buy any foundation, you need to find out what tone and undertone your skin has. Tone of your skin is the color you can see on surface of your skin. For right foundation you should look at the tone of your neck and body, because sometimes the tone of your face can be different than your neck. You can belong to fair, medium, olive or dark tone.
There are many ways how to determine undertone, which is very important like tone. One of them is to look at your veins on the inside of your wrist. If the veins appears blue or purple then you have cool undertone skin. If the veins appears green, then your skin is warm. If this one didn't help, there is another trick. Grab a piece of white paper and put it against your skin. Look at the mirror and focus on the contrast to the white paper. If it appears as pink or rosy, then you have cool skin undertone. If yellowish, then you have warm undertone.
Alright, now we know what color your skin has, but that's not everything. Next what you need be aware of is how your skin behaves - is it oily, dry, combination or sensitive. Now we know everything about your skin, so next step what you should do is to decide what do you actually want from the foundation. How long it should last - up to 4, 8 or 12 hours? What coverage - light, medium or full? What about finish - matte, even, dewy or natural? These factors are only and one more only about you and your preferences.
So when you know your requirements, now it's your time to do some research. There are two ways how you can do it. First sit at home, bring your computer, type all your requirements and just read many many many many reviews till you find your prefect foundation. Second one is to go to the store and ask. I think this method can be tricky, because sometimes some people are real profi and know their sortiment, but sometimes they have no idea about any of those products. Whatever method you choose, I would recommend to ask for a sample, so you can try it out and decide if you really like it or not.
MASCARA
I think that choosing the right mascara can be very tricky. Even here you should decide what you expect from mascara - volume, length, neutral, spider effect, … I found this picture where you can see which wand is good for. The last step is only reading and searching on the Internet, because 70% of products on market don't do what they promised (in my opinion). But be aware, what works for someone doesn't have to work for another, so please, be more patient and find more than 2-3 reviews before buying it.
EYESHADOWS
If you can't decide between buying single eyeshadows or eyeshadow palettes, I always recommend the eyeshadow palettes. More options, usually cheaper and travel friendly. When you choose the right one for you, you don't have to use anything else.
First thing you should decide before buying is if you're more into neutral, or colorful, pink / gold / smokey colors. Second thing you need to decide what finish you want - shimmer or matte. Third thing you should search for is pigmentation. The pigmentation should be rich. Fourth thing you should look for is good blending job. You never can work with eyeshadows which you can't blend out. When you answer all the question, search again and read reviews. In this case I think you find more luck with pricier brands, not luxury, but high ends or close to high ends. For me I can recommend Zoeva eyeshadow palettes for the little cheapest option, and then of course Too Faced, Urban Decay, Anastasia Beverly Hills, Kat von D, etc.. If you wanted to invest into 30-40 colors in eyeshadow palettes, everyone is raving about Morphe Brushes Pro Makeup Palettes. I haven't tried this brand yet, so can't talk from my experinces, but I've heard many great things about these ones.
If you are not sure what colors do suit you, you can use this picture as an idea. This is according your color of iris. But honestly, I think any color suits to everyone. Don't be scared and step out of your normal comfort zone.

BLUSH
When you don't know what blush you want to buy, I would go with only one rule! You like it and you not scared to wear it? Go ahead and buy it. But if it's still not enough for you, there are some tips. When it comes to blush, I prefer that ones which are not super pigmented, because it's always easy to build up rather than struggle with too much pigmentation which doesn't have to end always good. Second thing is the finish. This is everyone's choice again, but I would recommend matte one, or matte with just a little bit sheen. Definitely not the ones with sparkles. And one more tip - follow your skin tone. If you have light skin tone, you will never be wrong with lighter shades (soft pink, peach, or light coral). Medium skin tones look great with darker shades but not too dark (mauve, darker peach and pink). And at the end dark skin tones look great in bold colors (fuchsia, bright coral or even warm brown).
LIPSTICK
The last advice / tip you I would like to give you guys is about lipsticks. I'm not gonna repeat myself that you need to decide the finish of lipstick - matte, sheen, cream, satin, pearl and what color is the right for you, because it's only and only up to you and how self-confident you are, but please, don't be scared of bright or dark lips. They are sexy and every women can wear them. Just one little tip, if you focus on bold eyes, you never go wrong with neutral lipstick and vice versa, if you go with bold lipstick, leave your eyes simple.
There are many many great high end and drugstore lipsticks. I think you can definitely find great options in drugstore (NYX, Rimmel, Maybelline, …).
If you would like to see some color tip, look at the picture down below and follow your undertone again.
I hope I helped at least some of you guys. I know these are just the basic tips, but because they are basic, we should be aware of them and be sure that our choices are the best one we can make.
Have a wonderful day lovers!
Love, Michelle <3

What a great guide! Thanks so much for putting this together especially the tips about the mascara wands! Too often do I get distracted by pretty packaging and forget the overall lash look I want to achieve so this is very helpful :) x
ReplyDeleteYou're welcome. I remember myself a few years back when I struggled with choosing the right products. :D
DeleteAnd hell yeah, the packaging is always the evil. :D :D
Great tips! I'm still on the fence about my skintone. I always thought I have yellow undertones but I'm starting to think I am neutral. I don't suit light peach for example and I suit berries or jewel tones.
ReplyDeleteYeah, undertone can be very tricky, but ones you got it right everything is easier. I have a problem, that my skin is too yellow and sometime the warm foundations are not enough warm. :D
Deletegreat tips lovely! I stick to warmer shades for lippies, cooler pink and red lippies always look off on me!
ReplyDeleteThank you! Same for me, I always look weird when I wear cooler tone shades of lipstick.

ReplyDeleteThank you and I'm glad I helped. :)
Deletesuch a handy guide for sure! I am sure this will help many people out :) I agree with eyeshadow palettes over individuals, as most palettes are designed for the colours to work together so it's a good base line.

DeleteWow what a comprehensive post. I was quite surprised with the colours you suggest for blue eyes
ReplyDeleteThank you so much. Before I wasn't sure about the colors either, but as more as I thought about the green colors, I found out that they look magical with blue eyes. :)
DeleteYou've covered everything in this post Michelle - thanks for the reminder about how to determine your skin undertone. I have both blue and green veins, so I figure I'm neutral, but the white paper trick is a beauty, will definitely try it out xxx
ReplyDeleteThank you Kat! :)
